We're making a game for real
To all of you reading, welcome to our devlog! So much has happened since the jam kicked off a few weeks back and I want to recap everything briefly so that you know where we're at in the project.
Game jam was great
The reason why this game exists at all was the very cool prompt from the 1-Bit Jam. "Start with everything, end with nothing" was a theme that immediately got our minds turning. We had a really good time developing the game and we met some very cool people in the process.
Jam rules
Since the jam rules state that we can't update the game after the submission deadline, we were kind of left with all these levels that we couldn't show to anybody. That's why we have a new page for the game. So that we can show you the progress we've made and get you excited for the bigger game that's coming soon.
A 'full' game
Most of our time was spent trying to make a 'full but small game' that we could be proud to share and distribute to friends and family in the local area. Kathleen designed a beautifully printed download code kit that people really liked! We also made a bunch of cool stickers, including a holographic Nothing Door.
A website
20 New Levels
We added 20 new levels, and changed some of the old ones. I'm telling ya... some of them are pretty damn tricky! The full version will include all of them.
Undead / Living Sprites
Now, when you attack an enemy so hard they flip into the undead, or heal so hard they return to the living, they'll have some new sprites for you to enjoy!
New Enemy
We created a new enemy called a 'Depositron'. It's another 'machine' enemy which doesnt have any health. The first time you hit this enemy they will take the item in your use slot. The second time they will put it back into that slot, then explode. This means you can use the Depositron to rearrange the items in your inventory.
It adds a new dimension to the puzzles.
New Item
We also created a new item called the 'Wand'. It flips the health of the enemy. Sounds pretty simple, but it really allows us to make some truly complex and difficult puzzles.
Bosses
At the end of each world, excluding the tutorial world, there is a gigantic boss monster waiting to face you! Kathleen did an incredible job with these sprites. They're so cool.
'The End'
We don't want to bonk people over the head with the story, but rather let our player's imagination do the heavy lifting. However, we did feel like there needed to be some kind of conclusion to the effort. We're working on an epic finish, but for now we have a cute little ending that only the most obedient players will see.
More Platforms
Our goal over the next couple months will be to make this game available to as many people on as many devices as possible! We want you to be able to play it anywhere.
Growing the game
We have so many more ideas we want to show you that are in the works, but for right now let's just say that the Nothing Door is very pleased with our progress and will be expecting even more trials soon.
Thank you for playing!
Adam
